Nigeria Mbu Bookfeeding

Our first library in Nigeria is in Mbu, which is located approximately 600 km east of Lagos, in Isi-Uzo L.G.A. of Enugu State. As it is slowly becoming a tradition, this library also was a result of a random chitchat. Carolin met Chijioke Alaku on the plane to Scottish Aberdeen. That’s how easily a general conversation you might have with the person sitting next to you can lead to building a library for people in need!

While Chijoke came up with the idea of building a library for the community in Mbu, one of our partners, Books Abroad, was preparing to send a large shipment of books to Nigeria and asked us if we wanted some for our libraries. Talk about perfect timing! Of course we decided to help him and thus the fundraising began.

With the help of Chijoke’s cousin, who lives not far from the Mbu community, we managed to reconstruct an old school building to host the library. A few months later the awaited container arrived and since there were enough books for two schools, the communities decided to share and distribute the extra material to two high schools about 100 km apart.
