Senegal Fora Diawara Bookfeeding

This library is located in Senegal in a very small village called Fora Diawara, near Mauritania’s borders, accessible by donkey cart. The building of the library is located on the school property right next to the teacher’s house. This ensures not only that our library is always open, but also that the students, and whoever else wishes to read, has full support at all times.

The library is open to a student population of 150 and other community members, who are supported by teachers from the village. The senegalese charity AJUFD (Association des Jeunes Unis de Fora Diawara) is responsible for the management of the library.

A volunteer from the community in Fora Diawara is overseeing the library on a daily basis. It was built in November 2018 with the help of a few European Bookfeeders and many locals who worked together and renovated the entire building.

Volunteers can stay with local families, who cook for them in exchange for a small contribution. There are a number of places other than the library where volunteers can get involved: former volunteers started a permaculture garden, a number of farmers would be happy to learn new agricultural practices and the children always need a mentor at the library.

This community speaks mainly Pular and Soninké, however many people also speak French. The library has currently books in French and English. As the teachers also teach Spanish, they would also be happy about Spanish books.
